Frequently Asked Questions

What size logs do you use?

On average, 10 to 12 inches at the top and 14 to 16 inches at the butt. Only full length logs are used for superior strength.

What type of wood?

Our craftsmen can build using various species such as: Spruce, Western Red Cedar or Douglas Fir. We prefer Douglas Fir for its finer grain, smaller checks, shades of color and strength.

What notch do you use?

It is possible to build using various notches such as; saddle, wedge, round or Norwegian. The wedge notch, which has a scarve top and bottom, provides for an extremely tight draft-free and waterproof fit, so it is most commonly used.

Do you need chinking between logs?

No. Only if you would like it for decorative purposes. A lateral groove is cut on the underside of the logs and insulation is placed in the groove. Insulation is also placed in the notches. This provides for draft free log walls and corners.

What about shrinkage around windows and doors?

A log wall will shrink anywhere from 4 to 6 inches in height when completely dried. The builders leave 4 to 6 inches above the windows and doors to allow for this process. It is totally covered by trim boards.

How are the windows and doors cut out?

You can have a straight cut or a flared design around the windows and doors. Windows are all keywayed and key ways are supplied. Window bucks are attached to the key ways by the homeowner. This allows free movement of the log walls.

What is the roof system?

Log ridge, purlins and posts according to design plans.

How is the log shell moved?

Each log piece is numbered and loaded onto a truck or into a shipping container. Trucking and a crane for re-erection is not included in the cost.

Do you send anyone to help with the set-up?

Yes, we send one experienced builder to supervise the set-up on your foundation. You will need a small crew to help with the re-erection of your log shell.

How long does it take to set-up?

1 day for a small cabin. An average home takes 2 to 3 days. A larger home, 6 days or more.

How long does it take to build a log shell?

Anywhere from 3 weeks to 12 weeks, depending on the size.

Does the log shell package include stairs and railings?

If there are interior and exterior stairs and railings on your plan and these are included in your quote, then yes.

What is the price per square foot?

Contrary to what others might say, it is not possible to quote by the square foot. We can say anwhere from $25.00 to $40.00 per square foot, but there are too many variables. Items that must be considered are: size of windows and doors, interior log walls, arches, floor joists, loft beams, etc.

Is the log shell cleaned before shipping?

Yes, we rough sand and then fine sand our log shells before shipping. This is a very labor intensive job, but our log shells come to your site with a nice finish, ready for staining.
