ow our building process makes us special...
Every handcrafted log home by Superior Log Home is as unique as the people who live in them. We custom handcraft our homes by focusing on the needs of our customers while paying special attention to every detail throughout the entire building process.
|
Our homes stand apart from the competition because we believe in building quality vs. quantity and focus on maintaining a consistent standard of
excellence. All of our homes have a lustrous finish due to our fine sounding process and unique style of notch, called the saddle.
The building process begins when the plans are received and the species of log is chosen. You may decide to use a plan from our website, submit a rough sketch, or work with our draftsman to design a plan.
At Superior Log Homes, we build our homes with a variety of log species including: Douglas fir, Spruce, and Western Cedar. Douglas fir is our preferred species as it is stronger with a finer wood grain and tighter checks.

|
All of our homes are custom built using logs which are handpicked in the winter months and air dried for the lowest sap content. We are able to build with any size of log, however to achieve the best look, we recommend using logs that average in size from 10-12 inches at the top and 14 to 16 inches at the butt.
|
Each log is hand peeled using a traditional drawknife to uncover the logs natural beauty. We only use full length logs of the highest grade and strength. After the logs have been hand peeled, our experienced builders skillfully cut, fit, scribe, and notch each log individually.
Superior Log Homes is able to provide various notch styles; though, most of our customers prefer the "saddle notch."
The saddle notch offers an extremely tight fit which is draft free and waterproof; this prevents rot deterioration and moisture build up.

Window and door openings are cut in and keywayed; window designs can vary from a straight cut to a flared design.
A lateral, which is a groove, is cut on the underside of the log where insulation is placed between each log. This provides for an air tight fit and therefore chinking is not required but can be used for decorative purposes.
Roof systems, are constructed consisting of ridge, purlins and posts. Log stairs and railings are according to your plans. Holes for the thru bolts are drilled at the corners where neccessary and screw jacks are provided where required.
Once the structure of the log shell has been completed, the labor intensive process of fine sanding begins.
|
The advantage of our fine sanding method includes:
· Slower water absorbtion through log
· Transfers heat slower than rough surfaces
· Smooth surface reduces areas for insects to nest
· Surface is less likely to damage clothing
· Smooth exterior surface is easier to stain and protect
After the sanding process is complete, it is time to individually number and load the log shell onto a transport truck, or in a container for shipping.
